No Reason 04:15
Feeling heat beneath the smoke and wires Applaud for the reason and be caught swinging upside down Trade the truth for no more lies There is no reason to be caught Skulking shades hide their eyes This is the season to be caught swinging upside down Her dress was hired and the ring is tired She has her reason and was caught swinging upside She cried Baby don’t leave me here So soon Darling, don’t you know the heart Must bleat and bleed Everytime The knives were dropped and the line mistimed Laugh for no reason He was caught swinging upside down Pristine shirts and tucked in ties They will have their reasons and be caught swinging upside He cried Baby don’t leave me here So soon But darling don’t you know the heart Must bleat and bleed Everytime

If we’d packed up our old kit bags yesterday And today those rags were all gone There’d be no boats Out upon the water No folks hand in hand Wading through the fields The trains still at standstill They’d be running on time One day I’ll find her One day I’ll release her But not for now There’d be medicines for hangovers And a rope to pull the sleigh The knives sequential Still in sequence And the pavements and roads still open Today today Today One day I’ll find her One day I’ll release her But not for Now

God spat human blue dance The North Star porter’s callithump An ode to the trumpet calls For histeridae and pilot falls The dough in the legs of man So bitter once the juices ran The operator dialled fancied tones Amused and sang the great put downs Dazzling tobacco fug Of cracker crabs and thugs In cloaca, figs and straw Bowers rump and roar All rushed in a steady wake Bright bubbles rose opaque God put His hands back down Coughed then spat the most harsh of times Slow, slow, quick quick quick, slow Slow, quick slow Slow, quick quick quick A head snap sideways slum Box step rifle shell drone Heel leads Troops itch and sway Victor waxes and wanes Into the bottomless blue A free spin nutate In an ever bottomless blue Dance. A split stamp fractured mazard Vine tendrils round deer skulls Vying for the termite throne The watchtower now a woodchip cone. Together 04:08
A tongue breaks more Than a hammer could feel. Her softly shinning hair - Come comb me. Carefully wound neck brace - Come hold me Just as night falls into day Together we will stay Falling For another Falling Into nothing Falling. Sat chair height A matter for peeling Siblings laid coughing Gift's wage so tiresome Spent high Just a matter of peeling Come wash me. Just as night falls, A day in together we’ll stay Falling For one another Falling Into nothing Falling. Careful steps are round Motion with all meaning Mobile heart all seeing Same space, same pace A lime of cemetery Come fill me Just as night falls A day will stay together Falling for another Falling Into nothing Falling Just as night falls into day Together we will stay Falling For another Falling Into Nothing Falling

about

"5/5* Exceptional ambition, exceptional achievement: Bravo!" Jazz Journal

"Missing articles in music history have been discovered! Perfectly unpredictable, distorted in mood and sound. Lashing between a clear melodic line - dialectical, dialogical - chaotic improvisation and electronic strangeness." Kulturni Magazine UNI (CZ)

"An outstanding album, an unpredictable and intriguing amalgam of musical art and storytelling that deserves broad attention." - Exposé

"A heart of darkness beating out of time - an invigorating frisson for those who dare flirt with madness." - PROG

“The innate theatricality, makes this work special - something that is memorable despite it’s challenging nature.” Gonzo Circus (NL)

"Some albums need to be heard to be believed.. this you still won’t believe after you hear it. Like Tom Waits fronting Pere Ubu — if they were an avant-garde punk-jazz band." - Tinnitist

“One of 2020's most unusual and arresting releases. Doom-laden, dark, dystopian— yet such is its vision, energy and imagination it's an energising and somehow uplifting body of work.” - All About Jazz

“A murky imaginary world of fog shrouded back streets, faded vaudeville and rum-soaked sailors belting out Brechtian drinking songs...It’s quite a trip.” - The Wire

"4/5* The music and lyrics are extraordinarily evocative, and once again the musicians all perform superbly throughout, complementing leader Andrew Plummer’s voice and words with great skill and acumen." - The Jazz Mann

"Highly experimental music that manages to include bursts of harmony into an otherwise cacophonous array of discordant yet enjoyable noise." - Uber Rock

“Diverse and theatrical, the music breathes a dark and melancholic atmosphere, sometimes fevered, and has some disturbed features, that reveal secrets even after several spins. Impressive.” - Opduvel (NL)

"4 of 5* - (W.S.R.) is the missing link between Zorn, Turnage, Satchmo, The Birthday Party and Gallon Drunk.” - Jazzwise

"Skeleton Blush brings derangement to a big band setting: it’s absolutely wild, low-down and seedy – and absolutely f***ing ace." - Aural Aggravation

“4/5* Skeleton Blush is a very good album. Concentrated and deep in terms of musicianship, songwriting, and atmosphere, the album genuinely does create it’s own little world.” - Musique Machine

Skeleton Blush is the long awaited follow up album to 2009’s highly-acclaimed Third One Rises. Featuring a super-group of musicians, Skeleton Blush tells a tale of exile, near-death, love, loss and redemption in the face of overwhelming squalor. Skeleton Blush evokes the sound-worlds of decadent cabaret, street music, electric jazz, avant-rock, 1970s East European animation in it’s intricate storytelling, in which brass, guitars and electronics mix like the paints in a palette to make for a vivid and ever-shifting avant backdrop.

Miles Davis, Henry Cow, Pere Ubu, Tom Waits, Kurt Weill, reminders of all of these poke from the jagged, moonlit streetscape of Skeleton Blush. Truly, however, it is a piece, a thing, an experience in it’s own right, a music of words and theatre, visual and sound art, dreams and nightmares.

______

Sparked by Paul Lewis, Skeleton Blush is based on Ray Kane’s extended treatment of an unnamed fairy tale by Tom Greenhalgh.

Special thanks to: all involved and the beautiful musicians, dear friends and companions on this carousel we’re fortunate to ride, Odgers and Kane for realising and painting dreams, Phosphorescent Darling - a naked, infinite love.

Nigel Watts, Clive Goldsworthy, Kerry Ann Docking, Doug McMurdo - may peace be with you.
